29. Wookey Traffic

    1. Following a discussion between some Wookey residents and some councillors from Wookey Parish Council we sent a request to Somerset County Council (SCC) to see if a 20mph speed limit in Wookey was appropriate.

    2. SCC then carried out a traffic speed survey with the following results:

    3. We then received a report from Somerset Highways. Here is an extract:
       "Thank you for your most recent email requesting further explanation of the recent speeds surveys undertaken in Wookey and any possible action I intend to make as a result.
       I have cross checked the results with other speed data that has recently become available to Somerset County Council and can confirm that the readings taken were a true and accurate reflection of speeds in this vicinity. The speed surveys were most encouraging with low speeds entering, exiting, and travelling through the village. As a result, based upon the speed evidence, the (lack of) Police recorded injury collisions and the environment and geometry of the roads in Wookey acting as natural traffic calming, I cannot warrant spending my limited funds or resources on a hollow scheme such as reducing the speed limit to 20mph.
       Whilst the Parish are entitled to investigate the possibility of self-funding a 20mph limit, it is my strong professional opinion that this would not be a judicious spend of community funds"

    4. This report and the survey results were then discussed at the Wookey Parish Council Meeting on 24th April and the conclusion was drawn that a speed limit of 20mph was not necessary.

The Council

Wookey Parish Council is responsible for local issues, including setting an annual precept (local rate) to cover the council’s operating costs and producing annual accounts for public scrutiny. The council evaluates local planning applications and works with the local police, district council officers, and neighbourhood watch groups on matters of crime, security, and traffic. The council's role also includes initiating projects for the maintenance and repair of parish facilities, as well as consulting with Mendip District Council on the maintenance, repair, and improvement of highways, drainage, footpaths, public transport, and street cleaning. Conservation matters (including trees and listed buildings) and environmental issues are also the responsibility of the council.

Avian Influenza

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) has been in the country for over a year and since 1 October 2022 there have been 90 confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in England alone.  Which brings the total number to 222 cases of HPAI H5N1 in England since the H5N1 outbreak started on 27 October 2021.  As you may know this strain of the AI is what they call zoonotic in that Humans can catch it, although very treatable people have died from it. 13 of the AI outbreaks have been in Devon/Somerset and this effects our economic trade as well.
